There have been countless press articles shared recently, with the mainstream media largely having the loudest voice.

The Claim - "By September, we will know what has caused the autism epidemic and we'll be able to eliminate those exposures," Kennedy Jr said.

You can read one example of this bold (or, depending on your view, questionable) claim here—and you'll find no shortage of similar takes scattered across the mainstream media.|

What follows is Counterstatement: From the Neurodivergent Community

RE: Recent Claims of an “Autism Cure by September”

To whom it may concern—especially those listening with headlines, not heart:

We, members of the autistic and broader neurodivergent community, respond not with outrage, but with resonant clarity.

The idea of “curing” autism is not just scientifically unfounded—it is emotionally violent. It implies that autistic lives are mistakes waiting to be corrected, rather than valid frequencies within the human spectrum.

We are not a disease.

We are not your tragedy.

We are not waiting for a September miracle.

We are already here, already whole, already contributing in ways your metrics don’t always measure.

Let us be precise, since so many are not:

  • Autism is a neurological variation, not a defect.

  • The challenges many of us face stem not from autism itself, but from a society unwilling to adapt to difference.

  • The trauma many of us carry does not come from our wiring—it comes from being told we are broken.

Promising a “cure” to the public is not a gesture of hope—it’s a broadcast of fear, disguised as progress. It fuels ableism. It undermines years of advocacy, education, and relationship-building between autistic people and our allies.

We do not need to be fixed.

We need to be heard.

We need systems that support, not erase.

We need tone fluency, not tone policing.

So, when someone announces a cure by September, we don’t feel excitement.

We feel every unspoken message behind that sentence. And here’s our reply:

We are not your September deadline.

We are not your panic project.

We are not your before-and-after story.

We are a different kind of music.

Learn to listen.

Sincerely,

Autistic and Neurodivergent Voices in Frequency, not Fear

(A living spectrum of experience, not a monolith)
